Marek Abramowicz

Marek Abramovich, astrophysicist. He has worked and taught at many universities in Europe and the USA, the longest in Gothenburg, where he headed the department of astrophysics for 20 years, and 15 years with Dennis Sciama’s team, in Oxford and Trieste. His main research topic is black holes and accretion disks around them. He co-authored papers that introduced the disk models commonly used today into astrophysics: Polish Doughnuts, Slim Disks, Adafs and MADs. Several of his doctoral students became professors at top universities in Europe, the US and China. He was associated with Jerzy Giedroyc’s Culture circle in Paris – he published several historical and philosophical essays in Kultura. He also published in Wyborcza, Przewodnik Katolicki, Odra, Scientific American. He published an autobiographical book, Between God and Truth (Wydawnictwo Literackie, 2022). Photo by Henryka Kozicka.
