Krzysztof Szade is an Assistant Professor and Head of the Laboratory of Stem Cell Biology at Jagiellonian University in Kraków, Poland. He obtained his PhD in medical biotechnology from Jagiellonian University and completed postdoctoral training at Stanford University in the laboratory of Irving Weissman. His research focuses on hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) biology, particularly mechanisms of aging, lineage bias, and interactions with the bone marrow niche.
Dr. Szade has made key contributions to understanding HSC heterogeneity, including the identification of Neogenin-1 as a marker distinguishing myeloid-biased stem cell populations. His work has also demonstrated how dysfunction of the bone marrow niche drives premature stem cell aging and how these effects can be reversed. He has authored over 40 publications with more than 3,000 citations.
He is a recipient of the European Research Council Starting Grant and multiple national and international awards. His current research aims to uncover how hematopoietic stem cells remember past exposures and how they contribute to leukemia development.
