Black holes are among the most extreme objects in the universe. Their existence was predicted by general relativity, but only recently have we been able to observe them – both in electromagnetic light and through the detection of gravitational waves. Researchers representing two key approaches to this issue will take part in the conversation: theoretical modelling and astrophysical observations. We will discuss how telescope data is combined with theoretical predictions in practice, what has already been understood about black holes and their role in the evolution of galaxies, and where significant unknowns remain.
