The origins of the universe, rebellious cells, the way of life and evolution of our distant ancestors, consciousness and artificial intelligence, and a world that adapts and changes – Copernicus Festival 2026: “Complexity” is an intellectual adventure that will help us better understand the reality around us. For the twelfth time, leading scientists and popularizers will discuss what surprises, disturbs, and delights in the modern world, as well as the challenges of conducting scientific research.

From May 19th to 24th at the Museum of Engineering and Technology in Krakow (ul. Wawrzyńca 15), the festival’s main events will explore the complexity of the world at various scales – from systems governed by the most fundamental laws of physics to phenomena occurring in contemporary society, so rapidly changing thanks to the development of new technologies. The program also includes, for the first time in the festival’s history, expert panels addressed to the scientific community, co-organized with key national and European granting agencies: the European Research Council, the National Science Centre, and the National Centre for Research and Development. Many events for younger participants will take place as part of additional sessions at the Jagiellonian University.

Jagiellonian University is carrying out the commissioned task “Copernicus Festival 2025-2027: Organization of three editions of an international festival popularizing science.” The commissioned task is financed from the funds of the Minister of Science and Higher Education.

We try to manipulate it, to lengthen or shorten its naturally flowing rhythm. However, the more we study it, the more we see how little influence we have on its course. Sometimes a few seconds evoke the impression of being a whole eternity, and a decade can pass unnoticed. We talked about time, its individual perception, the role it plays in the sciences, its philosophical dimension and also its literary depictions on October 6 versus October 11, 2020.

Due to the pandemic, the festival took place entirely online. We saw our guests on our YouTube channel, on Facebook and on Spotify podcasts.
At Copernicus Festival 2021, we talked about different takes on imagination. What is it really? Where did it come from? How is it possible that our small brains can use this extraordinary tool so ingeniously and effectively? And finally: does imagination have limits? And if so – what lies beyond them?

Excellent guests helped us explore the theme of imagination between May 18 and 23, during the virtual edition of the festival.

How is access to information changing our perception of reality? Do we actually live in information bubbles, sustained by social media? What truths about the world does one cubit contain? By studying the information stored in genes, can we predict the future of our species? These and other questions were answered by guests of Copernicus Festival 2022: Information.
